At Crumbs to Crunch we often turn to baked goods when the weather is bad. So it was a stroke of luck that in the midst of freezing rain and hail we suddenly found ourselves in the cosy interior of the Swedish Church Café.
Situated near Edgware Road, the Swedish Church is a bit of a hidden gem. Sure, there is the largest Swedish flag that I have ever seen hanging outside, but we had to buzz to get into the building, and the café itself is tucked away down some stairs and round a corner.
Once you're there, it really feels like you've been transported to Stockholm. The lovely café is filled with Swedish magazines, all the signs are in Swedish and all the staff speak Swedish. In fact, we were the only non-swedes there. It seems like the perfect place to hang out for the home-sick Swede (or just those who love Sweden! I've watched enough episodes of The Bridge to make me a big fan of Scandanavia. Even if there do seem to be a lot of murders there...) They even sell Swedish foods that you can't normally buy in England.
But lets cut to the chase- there is only one thing on the menu: traditional Swedish cinnamon buns. And they are out of this world. I feel like words fail me and I cannot describe how good they were. The plaited buns are little pockets of cinnamon goodness. You would be hard pressed to find any that match them. As if you needed further incentive, they're a steal at £1.50
Beverages come in the form of fairly standard tea and coffee, or a really fun juice which was apparently strawberry flavoured.
We were sad to leave this wonderful little café, but two things sweetened our leaving: Firstly, payment is by honesty box- a concept that we love for its friendliness. Secondly, you get free gingerbread hearts. As the sign says on the door, 'Välkommen åter!'*
*Welcome back!
I did take some lovely pictures of the café, but sadly we lost the camera. So you'll just have to go and see it for yourself!
We were so inspired that we even made our own cinnamon buns at home. They were not quite the same as the ones at the Swedish Church but if you don't live near London then we definitely recommend Donal Skehan's recipe. |
